The holy month of Ramadan is here!
During this month Muslims all around the world keep a fast from dawn till the sunset called a Roza. Iftar is the evening meal with which individuals along with their families and friends end their fast. The food prepared during this period varies from country to country and from culture to culture.
The Iftar spread is mouth-watering! People break their fasts first by eating Dates. There is a grand variety of vegetarian, non-vegetarian food along with Sherbets that is a part of the Iftar spread.
Having studied in Jamia since the past 3 years, I have learnt about a sumptuous variety of dishes served during Iftar. I have also been lucky enough to be a part of some of these Iftar gatherings. Some traditional food items that are consumed after breaking the fast are Khajoor, Fruit salad, Chhole (chickpea) ki chaat, Pakode (fritters) of various kinds, Keema Samosa, Kebabs, Chips, Paapad, etc. The most commonly had sherbet during Iftar is Roohafza. People also have Shikanji, Lassi or Kesar Badaam sherbet to break their fast. This is followed by a main course which also has much variety, including mutton and chicken dishes. The final course of the day has desserts like Halwa or Phirni.
