What is the significance of Kamakhya Temple?

Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati is one of its kind temple in entire India, rather world

Located on a Hill in Guwahati it is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya and is popular for Tantrik Pooja too.

There is no Image of any goddess inside but a rock that’s hollow & looks like a YONI and is worshiped as the Goddess herself.

This Yoni is filled with water from a underground perennial Spring.

However, for 4 days in a year that Water changes to Blood and is said that the Goddess is on Menstruating and that time the Temple remains closed. During that period the famous Ambubachi Mela is held and ends on the day when the doors are opened.

I went there in 2010 and was an uneasy experience at first as just next to the main temple sacrifices (Buffalo/Pigeons etc) happen and the sight of some devotees dragging a Buffalo towards the sacrificial area was a sight I shall not forget. It was as if the buffalo knew whats in store.

Did you know about this place pehle se?
Have you been there?
Anything you want to add to this?

The Resident Pandits & Devotees shared many more stories/Facts. Couldn’t confirm so not sharing and waiting from people who know it better.
