Murthal ke parathe? Here’s where to eat and where not to..

A dozen and two of us met at Murthal and thus began the quest of figuring who is the greatest of them all. The team scoured six of these icons and boy did we have fun whilst doing so.

Dhabas In Murthal

1. Sunil Dhaba

We began with Sunil Dhaba the unsung hero of the brigade, thanks to the flyover curtailing it’s visibility the hordes bypass it for easier located options.

This one is tiny compared to the colossal neighbours but possesses a heart like no other. Started of with thandi kheer and what a beginning, this milky goodness was a treat to the mouth gullet and tummy. Probably amongst the better ones i have ever had, it was so good. First bite of the aloo pyaaz parantha and the spunk from the chilli was heartwarming, it simply massaged your taste buds to high heavens, perfect tanduri parantha couldn’t have hoped for better. Dal fry was quintessential Dhaba daal and loved by all and sundry. Sirka pyaaz here were a revelation they came chilled and crunchy and perfect accompaniments to our parantha and daal. Lassi was the only sorepoint for a near perfect beginning.

I had a sneaky feeling that rest was going to be downhill and I wasn’t much off the mark.

2. Pahalwan Dhaba

The merry band with happy but wanting for more tummies entered the busy pahalwan Dhaba and ordered the staplesl parantha and missi roti with daal, chana and jalebi. Everything sans the chana was ordinary to below.

3. Gulshan Dhaba

Our not so merry band was now a bit less and one short of dozen with hopes high we entered the iconic GULSHAN. The staples were ordered and disaster, only daal makhani was edible parantha and missi and the butter were bad.

Most of us were wishing by now that we would have been better off with finishing our meal at Sunil.

4. Mannat Dhaba

Still our quest and zest for food took us to Mannat and again the staples daal missi alu parantha and lassi was requested for. Food wasnt great but thankfully our taste buds weren’t molested, daal was acceptable and missi roti was delicious. Alu parantha and lassi unfortunately were not worth a mention.

5. No. 1 Ahuja Dhaba

With tummies now reaching the danger mark the foodie in us goaded us to enter our 5th spot which was Ahuja No. 1 and it was an unmitigated disaster, terrible is the word. A bad vibe to the place, horrible parantha and terrible daal. I was certain that we had reached the nadir of dhabas in Murthal, but we had one more to go and boy was I proved wrong.

6. Amrik Sukhdev Dhaba

With not a happy state of mind our crew entered the imposing Sukhdev Dhaba, it was a struggle to get a seat and the hordes eating there convinced us that this probably is the best.

Were we wrong or what.

The initial
Batch of paranthas had to be returned as they were undercooked and the replacement looked cooked to the eye but my mouth disagreed. This was one parantha which did not make it to my gullet I actually spat it out. Daal was blasphemous it was a travesty to lentils, butter and cream. It was shameful to put it on a table for human consumption. How or why the hordes make it to Sukhdev will remain a mystery to me. Really seeing the business at Sukhdev strengthens my belief that life is all about luck and blessings from the man in the sky.

Really guys the owners of Sukhdev are children of a different God.

I have made a silent promise to myself that the only time I enter Sukhdev will be to use the restroom and to strengthen my belief that life is all about luck.

Thus ended our quest for the finest MURTHAL Dhaba and I hope my views are in sync with the marks of our jury which our hard working admins will soon collate and post for all to see.

Taste of that fabulous kheer from Sunil Dhaba still lingers.
